UK to Create AI Lab for Biological Threats
The UK government is establishing an AI Biosecurity Lab to improve the country’s ability to understand, prevent, detect and respond to biological threats.
The government will provide £100 million for the lab. OpenAI and Anthropic have committed up to £200 million in AI model credits and related support. The lab is planned as an independent, non-profit organisation.
The government says the lab will use advanced AI to identify biological threats earlier. It will also help speed up the development and testing of vaccines, treatments and other medical measures against these threats.
The lab will work with public bodies, universities, industry partners and AI companies.
The wider investment package includes an additional £120 million for the UK’s AI Security Institute. It also includes £70 million for a National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre.
