UK Approves Gas Production at Jackdaw Field
The UK government has approved gas production at the Jackdaw field in the North Sea after years of debate.
Andy Burnham said the project would increase UK gas production by about 6% and support the country's energy supply for more than a decade. He said it would also improve energy security.
Burnham said the government remains committed to reaching net zero by 2050. He argued that oil and gas would be needed for years while the UK moves towards clean energy.
He said the project would protect hundreds of jobs in Scotland and add almost £3 billion to the UK economy during its lifetime.
Some Labour backbenchers and environmentalists have criticised the approval. Conservatives have also called for approval of the Rosebank oil field.
