G20 photo cancelled after ministers refuse to stand with Lavrov
A planned G20 group photograph in Atlanta was cancelled after Ed Miliband and other European ministers refused to be pictured with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The G20 meeting took place during tensions over Russia’s war against Ukraine and the US decision to invite Lavrov. Some countries were concerned about Russia’s presence at the meeting.
Miliband told Lavrov that Russia was the aggressor and said it was not winning the war. He praised Ukraine’s courage and the support of other countries. He also called for a fair and lasting peace.
Miliband urged countries to use economic and diplomatic pressure to reduce the money that, in his view, supports Russia’s war.
Ukraine is not a G20 member and was not invited to this year’s meeting, US officials said.
